Menus & Recipes

Updated: Dec 3, 2018

How would we survive without menus and recipes. We are able to create and design meals to our liking thanks to innovations like these!

There is a lot to be said about what makes certain meals so unique. What is comes down to is the recipes that guide someone to create the perfect dish. Something that I have found most interesting about these different dishes is that we are able to alter these creations and make them our own based not only on our personal taste, but also the environment that we live in. Just like these foods, we can also relate this back to our personal lives and create unique ‘recipes’ that we keep and cherish for a life time.

Food culture varies among many different communities around the world, and each is unique based on their surroundings.  The documentary “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” does an excellent job to engage both aesthetics and erotic of food across different cultures based on religion, culture, climate, and many other aspects of life. The different substances that make up the rich tastes in our foods that keep us coming back for more. Things like butter, salt, and olive oil all cooked over a hot stove can create a one of a kind meal. I never considered the large variety of each ingredient from sweet to spicy, and bitterness too.

After watching the documentary, I decided to take a field trip over to the UNM Zimmerman Library to view the murals that are on display. It was truly something special and admirable. New Mexico has an extremely unique culture and food is something that is always around when people gather together. I was so intrigued with all the aspects of agriculture that I was able to find while overlooking these works of art. We are harvest country and set an excellent example of food to table, utilizing everything that we can grow in our part of the world. Something that I was able to notice from many of the murals is the culture and families growing together. I really admire this and hope that we as New Mexicans can continue to incorporate old traditional values into our modern ways of living today.

I decided that I was not done there, I walked over to the Zimmerman circulation desk and reviewed the recipe book that was held on reserve called “Pueblo Food Experience” and “Frida’s Fiestas”. As a reader, I can say that these were extremely influential to incorporate into my own cooking. These traditional dishes are unique to New Mexico as a culture and can only be replicated best in areas like ours. I am intrigued to further research and re-create some of these dishes homemade. Its delightful to learn about the teachings of food in the kitchen because it truly brings people together of a nice home cooked meal.

After watching, reading, and viewing different documentaries, cook books, and art exhibits, I have a much different outlook on food. Food is something that describes who we are, our interests, and we can express ourselves through the foods that we create. There is different emotions and feelings that are poured into recipes created for people to gather around at the dinner table. These different tastes can make us feel many different emotions inside. Food is home and unique for each one of us.
